Lighthouse Group, a West Michigan- based insurance company, enthusiastically embraces the power of community action. Members of Lighthouse Group regularly volunteer time, sponsor events and raise money to benefit nonprofits throughout Michigan. One of Van Andel Institute’s (VAI) most dedicated and generous event sponsors, Lighthouse Group has contributed more than $100,000 to benefit the Institute’s biomedical research and science education initiatives.
Eve Rogus, vice president and principal of Lighthouse Group, is a passionate supporter of VAI’s mission to improve health for current and future generations. For more than six years, she has helped facilitate Lighthouse Group’s partnership with the Institute.
“We believe passionately that VAI will develop new therapies and cures for cancer and other diseases,” Rogus said. “We consider it a privilege to partner with VAI as it continues to forge ahead to achieve its goals.”
Supporting organizations like VAI comes naturally to Lighthouse Group. For 20 years, its mission statement has included a commitment to community involvement, reflecting its belief that well-placed philanthropy can change the world.
“Our support for the Institute is based on the notion that we can help scientists develop better and faster treatments for cancer and other diseases and make a difference locally at the same time,” Rogus said. “By contributing to the health sciences in West Michigan, we support job growth, the perpetuation of knowledge and the global integration of the Grand Rapids community.”

Lighthouse Group was recognized for their commitment to growth and development of its young professional population at the Grand Rapids Young Professionals (GRYP) Annual Gala on August 24, 2017. The Mentor Organization of the Year Award honors organizations that strive to support and provide opportunities for leadership development.
Through research, Lighthouse has identified that in the next five years 40% of the insurance industry will retire. In anticipation of this, Lighthouse piloted the Relationship Manager program, for which they recruit young professionals to fill that gap.
“Everyone involved with this program truly embodies Lighthouse’s value system. It’s a perfect mix of hard-work, knowledge and a slice of fun,” said Tom Helmstetter, CEO of Lighthouse Group. “It’s hard to put into words but the transformation we’ve seen in the young professionals over the six weeks of the program so far is exciting. They’re already at a level where they can interact with senior producers using industry specific vocabulary.”
Lighthouse values helping individuals succeed and building a positive team spirit. These values have directly shaped the new program. A team of six new Relationship Managers all started on July 10 of this year and have been going through the training together.
Now in its second year, the program has seen measurable success. Relationship Managers are paired with mentors who have experience in the business to guide them as they navigate their way through the complexities of the insurance industry. Throughout the 12-week training period, the Relationship Managers have been exposed to all lines of insurance, and then received specified training for their chosen industry focus.
